Abstract
This study aims to identify the strategies used by teachers and how teacher apply these strategies to motivate students to speak in class. To answer the questions of this study, a qualitative research design was used and the instruments used were interviews and classroom observations. The participant in this study was one of the English language teachers in one of the private schools at SMK Sehat Insan Perjuangan Mojoagung Jombang, where the teacher has been teaching for five years. This research results in the teacher using drilling and creative task to motivate students to speak in class. The used of drilling as a teaching strategy was by asking students to rephrase words that have been spoken by the teacher repeatedly. While applying creative tasks as a teaching strategy, was to be given a stimulus in the form of a task then students were asked to present and other students were asked to comment. The result of using drilling and creative task as learning strategies was very effective in motivating students to speak in class. Keywords : Teaching strategies, speaking, motivation.
