Abstract
This is a study of semantics, focusing on the usage of simile markers by all of thephrases in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Novel, the fifth print published in2022by Gramedia Pustaka Utama. The cover was designed by Staven Andersen, written by L. Frank Baum. The main objectives of this study are twofold: toidentify the types of simile markers based on the Geoffrey N. Leech theory (1969) in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Novel, and to analyze the meaning of similemarkers used in “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Novel. The study uses aqualitative research design, analyzing the data in the form of simile markers foundin “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” Novel. The findings reveal that simile markersdivided six types of simile markers in this novel, they are: "like," "as...as," "as if,""just like," "such," and "as,". This study analyzed 57 total data. The most frequently used marker is “as…as”, with 28 data founds. These markers enhancethe narrative by creating vivid imagery, enriching descriptions, and conveyingemotions. The findings suggest that similes are important for the reader's interest and deeper understanding of the text. By comparing various elements withinthestory to familiar concepts, similes help readers visualize scenes more vividlyandconnect emotionally with the characters and events. The study aligns withprevious research on figurative language, demonstrating the effectiveness of similes in literary works. The conclusion, the study reiterates the significanceof simile markers in "The Wonderful Wizard of Oz," emphasizing their roleinenriching the narrative and enhancing reader comprehension.
