Abstract

Motivation is generally regarded as one of the factors that affect students' performance in learning English. This study investigates students’ level of motivation, students’ performance, and the correlation between motivation and students' performance in learning English. Quantitative method with correlational design was used in this study. To collect data, questionnaire and standarilized test istrruments were design. Data were collected from 50 students in grade 10. The data were statistically analyzed using Pearson Product Moment test on SPSS. The results showed that students’ level of motivation is modarate (M=3.22), students’ performance in learning English is in possitive result, and students' motivation and learning outcomes had a low correlation (r = 0.202). However, the correlation was not significant, p = 0.160. Therefore, the null hypothesis (H0) was accepted, indicating that the use of motivation does not significantly affect students' performance in English. Qualitative responses supported this result, highlighting students' aspirations, obligations and classroom experiences as influential factors.
