Abstract
This study aimed to identify the types of conversational implicature and its appliance in Niki Zefanya’s song lyrics on Nicole album (2022). The twelve songs lyrics analyzed in this study are: Before, High School in Jakarta, Backburner, Keeping Tabs, The Apartment We Won’t Share, Facebook Friends, Anaheim, Milk Teeth, Autumn, Oceans & Engines, On the Drive Home, and Take a Chance with Me. Conversational implicature, according to Yule’s (1996) theory divided into three different types, including: Generalized conversational implicature, scalar implicature, and particularized conversational implicature. This study used descriptive qualitative method with data collection techniques was through downloading all songs of Nicole album, listening to each song, downloading each lyrics script, listing utterances that contained conversational implicature, giving code to every data, and validating the data. The results of the analysis revealed that there are 73 data of conversational implicature found from the twelve song lyrics studied. The data distribution showed that generalized conversational implicature is the most frequent type that occurs (46,6%), followed by scalar implicature (42,5%), and particularized conversational implicature (10,9%). The analysis reveals that generalized conversational implicature plays an important role to uncover the implied meaning of the song lyrics, scalar implicature plays a role to convey the implied meaning by using the word that contains scale, and particularized coversational implicature has a role to uncover the implied meaning and heavily depend on the context of the song writer’s experience that happened in the past. These findings confirm that the use of conversational implicature is not only in the dialogue but also in song lyrics to convey the implied meaning in implicit way. Keywords: Conversational implicature, Yule (1996), Nicole album, song lyrics
