Abstract

This research analyzed the types of expressive illocutionary acts in the utterances of the main characters Shang-Chi, Katy, Wenwu, and Xi-Xualing in the film Shang-Chi and The Legend of Ten Rings by using a pragmatic approach. The objectives of this study are (1) to identify the types of expressive illocutionary acts used by the main characters in the movie Shang-Chi and The Legend of he Ten Rings, (2) to explain how the types of expressive illocutionary acts used are related to the context. This research used descriptive qualitative method that explores and describes data clearly, systematically, and accurately. The data used in this study are all utterances spoken by the main characters in the movie. The movie chosen is a movie in the genre of Action/Adventure, because the movie implies expressive illocutionary acts. The theory proposed by Yule (1996) is used to analyze the types of expressive actions and how they are applied. The results of this study show that the main character uses all types of expressive actions. There are six types used, namely pleasure, pain, like, dislike, joy, and sorrow. Meanwhile, the number of expressive actions found is 46 utterances. Expressive acts of pain are found as many as 4 utterances. Then, the expressive act of dislike is found as many as 15 utterances. Expressive acts of joy are 4 utterances. expressive acts of sorrow are 9 utterances. Expressive acts of pleasure are 7 utterances. Meanwhile, the expressive action of like is 7 utterances. These expressive types are used to convey the main character's feelings in the movie. The main character implies the expressive action of his feelings based on the context used. Because the main character is very emotional in facing various problems in his life. In the movie, Katy's character often expresses joy and like towards new experiences, reflecting her cheerful and jovial nature. Shang-Chi, on the other hand, shows pain and dislike through his actions of running away from his violent past and defying his father's wrongdoings. His sister, Xialing, also runs away from home feeling abandoned and betrayed by Shang-Chi. later Katy, who accompanies Shang-Chi during his escape, is unaware of his true identity. The family conflict escalates further with their father Wenwu's evil intentions towards his late wife's family, which leads Shang-Chi and Xialing to fight him. The movie depicts both sorrow and pleasure, highlighting the family's poor conditions and internal strife, which cause significant grief for Shang-Chi. Nonetheless, he finds happiness and a sense of family in America through his friendship with Katy. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech acts, Expressives speech acts, Movie
