Abstract
This study focused on analyzing the directive speech acts by the main characters in Barbie and the Three Musketeers movie, in order to; (1) investigate the types of directive speech act used, and (2) examine how the main characters used directive speech acts. Using Searle's theory of directive speech acts, this study employed a descriptive qualitative methodology to analyze the movie. This study uncovered 9 distinct types of directive speech acts used by the main characters: requesting (12 utterances), ordering (11 utterances), commanding (8 utterances), advising (7 utterances), challenging (5 utterances), permitting (4 utterances), inviting (4 utterances), begging (4 utterances), and prohibiting (2 utterances). These directive speech acts used in both positive feelings (ambitious, confident, certain, loving, and joyful) and negative feelings (panicked, annoyed, perplexed, hesitant, and desperate) by the characters. The findings revealed that these speech acts are expressing the characters' emotions and advancing the storyline. Particularly, they play a crucial role in the characters' endeavors to challenge and overcome the stereotype that musketeering is an exclusively male domain. The characters' use of directive speech acts was portraying their resolve and ingenuity in achieving their goal of becoming musketeers. Through their actions and relentless defiance, they embodied themes of teamwork, resilience, and risk-taking. Their commitment were highlighted through the various directive speech acts, which serve to illustrate their determination and their ability to surmount obstacles while remaining resolute in their pursuit. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech Acts, Illocutionary Acts, Directive Speech Acts, Barbie and the Three Musketeers
