Abstract

This study aimed to identify and explain the types of hedging strategies in negative politeness strategies used by the character Luffy in the One Piece LiveAction series. This study uses Brown and Levinson's (1987) theory of politeness strategies, focusing on four types of hedging: Hedges on Illocutionary Force, Hedges Encoded in Particles, Adverbial-Clause Hedges, and Hedges Addressed to Grice's Maxims. The method used in this research is descriptive qualitative, with data sources in the form of eight episodes of One Piece Live-Action Series. The results showed that Luffy consistently uses two types of hedging, namely Hedges on Illocutionary Force and Hedges Encoded in Particles, to minimize the threat of the interlocutor's face when recruiting the crew. This strategy reflects Luffy's polite, non-coercive, and friendly communication style. This study suggests that future research can explore other negative politeness strategies in the context of different characters and movie genres to enhance the understanding of pragmatics in popular media. Keywords: Hedging, Negative Politeness Strategy, Brown and Levinson, One Piece Live-Action, Pragmatics, Descriptive Qualitative.
