Abstract

This study focused to analyze the stages of culture shock and the impacts of culture shock experienced by Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie. The aims of this study were: (1) To identify the stages of culture shock through verbal and non-verbal expression experienced by Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie, (2) To explain the impacts of culture shock through verbal and non-verbal expression experienced by Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie. The method applied in this analysis was descriptive qualitative method. It applied to identify and explain the realist reasons of understanding the data. The data were in the form of conversation as verbal expression and movie scene as non-verbal expression that contained the stages and the impacts of culture shock experienced by Elizabeth Gilbert in Eat Pray Love movie. This study applied the theory of culture shock proposed by Ward (2001) and supported with the theory of non-verbal expression proposed by Charles Sanders Pierce (2003). The results of this study showed that from 38 data, Italy is one of the countries where Elizabeth Gilbert experienced the most culture shock with the total data of 16 data. 14 data of culture shock in Indonesia and 8 data of culture shock in India. In Italy and Indonesia, she dealt with all the stages of culture shock namely Honeymoon, Crisis, Recovery and Adjustment Stages. While in India, she only dealt with three stages from four stages of culture shock, namely Crisis, Recovery and Adjustment Stages. She didn’t deal with the Honeymoon stage when she was in India, because her arrival in India was greeted by bad environmental condition so that she didn’t feel the charm of India. This analysis also found out that there were two impacts of culture shock namely positive impacts and negative impacts. She gets the positive impacts when she dealt with Honeymoon Stage, Recovery Stage and also Adjustment Stage. Some of the positive impacts showed by Elizabeth Gilbert such as excitement, amazement, good social interaction and life changes. On the other hand, she also got the negative impacts when she dealt with Crisis Stage such as inconveniences, inadequacy, frustration, confusion and incompatibility.
