Abstract

This is the study of active and passive voice in Editorial of The Jakarta Post. Active and passive voice is common use in daily newspaper especially in Editorial, because it contains about the opinion of the Editor. The study applied syntax approach. This study was aimed to investigate which form of sentence was more dominant between active and passive voice in Editorial of online The Jakarta Post and explained why active and passive voice could be the dominant in the online newspaper. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from 5 topics of Editorial of online The Jakarta Post. They were Cost of Political Dynasties posted on Friday, March 18 th , 2016, Welcome New City Police Chief posted on Saturday, March 19 th , 2016, Convenience and Fairness posted on Sunday, March 20 th , 2016, Accountable Bureaucracy posted on Monday, March 21 st , 2016, Logistics Reform Coming Up posted on Wednesday, March 23 rd , 2016. There were 72 sentences analyzed in this research. The analysis focused on active and passive voice used in editorial of online The Jakarta Post news paper. The result of this study showed that 5 editorials of The Jakarta Post had found 72 sentences. It was the total number of active and passive sentences. 51 out of 72 were classified as active sentence while 21sentences were identified as passive sentences. Thus, the dominant sentence in 5 topics of Editorial was active sentence. It was caused by technique of editorial writing which focused on central theme in order that the reader could be easy to understand. This is proved by the editor of opinion of The Jakarta Post which state that active sentence was concisely and clearly about who did something. Certainly, the readers wished the information which was not excessively and confused. It also related to the function of using active sentence which focused on the subject or the agent of the sentence. Furthermore active sentence was dominant in Editorial of The Jakarta Post in order that the readers could be directly understand what the writer means.
