Abstract

Code switching is a language behavior in bilingual people. The use of code-switching does not only occur in daily life but also in the movie. So, it is very interested in analyzing code-switching in the movie. This study was analyzed the code-switching applied in the Last Samurai movie with using Socioliguistics approach. The purposes of the study were: (1) to describe the type of code-switching used in “the Last Samurai” movie. (2) to explain the cause underlying the use of codeswitching in “the Last Samurai” movie. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The main data in this study was the Last Samurai movie. Subtitle and the original script of this movie were supporting data. The characters were Captain Algren, Katsumoto, emperor, Omura, Nobutada, bayonet and Graham.In this movie, there were 15 data taken from the character‟s utterances in the Last Samurai movie. The type and cause of code-switching was analyzed by using Wardhaugh and Holmes‟s theory. The result of this study showed that there were 1type in the Last Samurai movie on the character‟sutterances. It was situational codeswitching. Then, 4 causes out of 7 causes, theywere : asserting power, pride and status had 1 data (7%), expressing solidarity had 1 data (7%), being more informative had 11 data (73%), conveying the speaker‟s attitude to the listener 2 data (13%). Total data were 15 (100%).The situational code-switching was found to be more dominant than the metaphorical code switching. It because the characters switched their code (or language) in different situation and they never changed the topic in dialogue. Keywords: Code, code-switching
