Abstract

This research focused on analyses the types and the functions of grammatical cohesion used in opinion text entitled “Yohana Yembise: Portrait of a True Papuan Lady”. The article was taken from The Jakarta Post opinion column. This research applied descriptive qualitative method to identify the types and explain the functions of grammatical cohesion. The data were in the form of words or phrases that contained the grammatical cohesion. This research applied the theory of grammatical cohesion proposed by Halliday & Hasan (2014). The results of this study showed that there were found 170 data. It consisted of four types of grammatical cohesion, those were reference, substitution, ellipsis, and conjunction. The type of reference was frequently used in the opinion text with the frequency 113 data in the whole text. Meanwhile, conjunction was the second highest with a frequency 51 data. Followed with ellipsis which found 5 data. Besides, substitution was rarely used which occurred once. For the function of grammatical cohesion used by Rob Goodfellow as the writer of opinion text is referred to Yohana Yembise life. Those were implied that the writer wanted to tell about Yohana Yembise’s biography, position, experiences, and contribution especially her values as a Papuan woman in Indonesia and the world.
