Abstract

English homophones are words that have the same sound (pronunciation) but different meanings and spelling. While writing English words through dictation, students often make errors especially on words that have similar sounds (homophones). This study aims to reveal the types of error made by students in writing English homophones and to investigate the factors that cause the errors. This study used descriptive qualitative method. The data were collected from eleven students of Gwynfor course through a test in the form of dictation and interview with the students concerning the errors they made. The result of the research found that the students’ errors can be classified into three types: misformation error, omission error, and addition error. The most frequent error that occured is misformation. There are several factors that cause students to make errors. They were the listener factor, speaker factor, and material/media factor. The most common cause factor is listener error; this is caused by limited vocabulary and students' understanding of some spoken words and difficulties in transcribing into written form. Keyword: Error analysis, Types of errors, The factors of errors, English homophone.
