Abstract
The implicit meaning or how we understand the utterance of a meaning even it is not said or written studied in Pragmatic. The pragmatic study in this research focused on the flouting maxims in Alvin and the Chipmunks movie. The purpose of this study was to find out the types and how maxims were flouted. This study based on the theory of Cooperative Principle proposed by Grice (1989) that established four maxims. They were maxim of quantity, maxim of quality, maxim of relation and maxim of manner. The approach of this study used descriptive qualitative. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative research because the researcher analyzed and discussed the utterances which perform flouting maxims in “Alvin and the Chipmunks” movie. The finding of this study revealed that all types of maxim were flouted. These four types of maxims could be clearly seen in 44 utterances. They were flouting maxim of quality, flouting maxim of relation, flouting maxim of quantity, flouting maxim of manner which were flouted 20 times, 13 times, 9 times and 2 times respectively. In conclusion, the main characters tended to flout maxim of quality rather than maxim of manner since they wanted to keep a secret or protect someone else. Finally, after finishing this research, hopefully this research can give contribution to the researcher herself, to the readers, and to the further researchers who want to conduct the same research. It is suggested to the next researchers to study more other related research, especially in the pragmatic scope.
