Abstract

This research was about the analysis of maxim violations in “Dinner for Schmucks” movie script. It aimed at analyzing the conversational maxims applied by the main character and other characters in “Dinner for Schmucks. This research used a descriptive qualitative method. By focusing on the statements of the problem, there were two inquiries in this study. The first one was to know what types of maxim violation that occurred in “Dinner for Schmucks”, and the second one was why the maxim violation occurred between the main character and other characters in the “Dinner for Schmucks” movie. In analyzing the conversational maxims, the researcher used the theory of Cooperative Principle by Grice (1989). In this theory, the Cooperative Principles includes four maxims. They were maxim of quality, maxim of quantity, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. However, this research only focused on three types of maxim. These were maxim of quality, maxim of relation, and maxim of manner. The researcher concluded that there were some reasons for the speakers to violate the maxims, such as they were not interested in topic; they did not want to hurt the participant; they wanted to change the topic of the conversation; they wanted to emphasize something, and so on. In addition, to help the readers understand the results of data analysis easily. the researcher also included the pictures of each conversation. The researcher found that there were 45 conversations which contain maxim violations and the most violated one was the maxim of relation, which counts for almost 50 % of the overall conversations (21 conversations).
