Abstract

This study analysed the types of expressive illocutionary acts on Miguel’s utterances in Coco movie using pragmatics approach. The purpose of the study are (1) To identify the types of expressive illocutionary acts used by the main character in Coco movie, (2) To explain how the types of expressive illocutionary acts applied related to the context. This study applied descriptive qualitative method which explore and describe the data clearly, systematically, and accurately. The data used in this study were all of utterances by the main character in the movie. The chosen animation genre movie, since the movie implied an expressive of illocutionary acts. The theory proposed by Yule (1996) used to analyse the types of expressive acts and how those types applied. The result of this research showed that the main character used all types of expressive acts. There are five types applied: pleasure, pain, likes, dislike, and joy or sorrow. While, the number of expressive acts found are 60 utterances. The expressive acts of pain found as 18 of utterances. Then, expressive acts of dislikes as 15 of utterances. Expressive acts of joy or sorrow as 14 of utterances. Expressive acts of pleasure as 9 of utterances. While, expressive acts of likes as 4 of utterances. Those types of expressive used to conveyed the feeling of the main character in the movie. The main character implied an expressive acts of his feeling based on the context applied. Since the main character was very emotional to face many problems in life. For expressive acts of pain and dislike, it might expressed a feeling of Miguel who oppose and disappointed with the family’s opinion about music. The family did not allow him to be a musician. While, for expressive acts of sorrow and pleasure used to expressed a Miguel’s feeling of his struggle for achieving the dream of being a musician. Then, the expressive acts of likes, it might be uttered Miguel’s feeling for his admiring of something or someone in his life. Indeed, those types applied by the main character based on the context that influenced what is said. Those type emphasized a feeling of unpleasant, anguish, disappointment and etc which the main character felt. Keywords: Pragmatics, Speech Act, Illocutionary acts, Expressives
