Abstract

This research was aimed to improve the students’ involvement in teaching learning process and the students’ ability in using simple present tense by implementing contextual teaching learning at eighth grade of MTsN Sumobito Jombang. This research is related to the result of preliminary study showed that the students had difficulty in applying grammar especially in using simple present tense. They also had low motivation in learning English. This research used Classroom Action Research (CAR) conducted to solve the students’ problem in understanding and using simple present tense. The CAR was done based on Kurt Lewin’s Design, in which it was conducted into two cycles. The subjects were students of E class of eight grade of MTsN Sumobito Jombang. This research used test and observation as the datum. The finding of this research indicated that the implementation of contextual teaching learning was succesfull since the criterion of success were achieved. The first criteria was the students’ mean score could pass the target score at least the same or more than 70. The finding showed that the students had already achieved the target score since the students’ mean score was 71,20. The second criteria was the sudents participate and show good response in teaching learning process. The result of observation showed that by using contextual teaching learning, the students were active involved in teaching and learning process since the percentage of students’ involvement was 89%. Based on the finding mentioned above, it can be recomended that applying contextual teaching learning can improve students’ ability in using simple present tense and also increase the students’ involvement in teaching learning process.
