Abstract

This study is about designing islamic pop up books for teaching reading comprehension at Al Khadijah English Course (ALKEC). This research was conducted due to the fact that ALKEC did not have interesting media for teaching reading comprehension. Therefore interesting teaching media that meet their learning needs is necessarry to be created The method used in this research was Design Research implementing the design model proposed by Akker, et al (2013). There are three phases in this model: Preliminary Study, Development Phase, and Assessment Phase. The results obtained are as follows. First, the learning needs identified were: (1) The students of ALKEC needed interesting media for learning reading comprehension, (2) The reading materials that needed pop up books were those of islamic stories, (3) There were 13 vocabularies that were categorized as target vocabularies that should appear in the stories. They were Messenger, truth, prophet, fasting, charity, pray, forgive, believe, peaceful, safe, kind, help, and generous. Second, based on the need analysis, the two pop up books with different themes, „respect to parents and generosity‟ were created. The target vocabularies that appeared on the first Islamic Pop Up Book are „Messenger‟, truth, prophet, fasting, charity, pray, forgive. On the second Islamic Pop Up Book the target vocabularies that appear are believe, peaceful, safe, kind, help, and generous. Those Islamic Pop Up Books are designed with islamic nuance. Third, the assessment from the students of ALKEC showed good responses as shown by the results of the questionnaires and therefore can be said as interesting in terms of the cover design, movable pictures, colors, and the story. Keywords: Teaching reading, Islamic Pop Up Books, target vocabulary
