Abstract

This study used Design-Based Research (DBR) to design anagram as teaching material. Anagram is similar to word game that helps the students play to find some vocabularies. This study was done in BEST due to the students’ needs in vocabulary improvement. This study did three phases of DBR; Preliminary phase, prototyping phase, and reflective/assessment phase. The preliminary phase showed that the needs of the students in learning English were on vocabulary and sentence construction. The Prototyping phase was done by designing anagrams that addressed the needs identified. In this case only 2 out of 3 needs were chosen; vocabulary and sentence construction. The design of the anagrams was suited with basic level of English learner. The researcher designed teaching material based on the students’ needs; the content of the material are 60% for vocabulary, 30% for sentence construction, and 10% for phrase word order. Reflective/assessment phase is done to assess the design of teaching material, it was assessed by the expert and the students of BEST. The result of this phase showed that the designed material is good to be used as teaching material because in this design consisted some attractive activity which could make the students feel joyful learning.
