Abstract

This study is a racism criticism that concerns on racial discrimination in society in African American of Langston Hughes poems. In Langston Hughes‟ first poetry book entitled “The weary blues”, which contain 17 poems. There were five famous poems which focused on racial discrimination. this poems was analyzed using Racism theory by Benjamin Bowling.The aims of this study were to investigate forms of racial discrimination in Langston Hughes poems and to describe how the racial discrimination occured.The method used was descriptive qualitative since the data were in the form of sentence and phrases in stanza of poems based on the racial discrimination found in the poems.The result of the research showed that there werethree racial discriminations found in Langston Hughes poems. They were segregation which found in “I Too, Children rhymes, Merry Go-round and As I grew older. Prejudice issue was found in Langston Hughes‟ poems entitled Dinner guest me and I Too. Skin color issue was found in “Dinner guest me”, “I Too”and “Children rhymes”. The segregation issue occured when the white people treated the black people as an inferior class with the social separation. The prejudice issue occured when the white people giving judgment and negative opinion toward inferior group. The skin colour issue occured when the white people giving different trait to the black people. It can be said that the five of Langston Hughes poems contain racial discrimination issues which show about inequality treatment of the white people toward the black people.
