Abstract

The purpose of this study is to explore students' perceptions of the challenges and advantages of the English program at Pondok Pesantren Al-Madienah in Jombang. The study employed a qualitative approach and a case study method, involving 24 students from four different classes. Data were obtained through questionnaires and semi-structured interviews. The results showed that, although the program positively impacted students' speaking skills, vocabulary, and selfconfidence, significant challenges remained. According to the students, the most dominant internal challenge is the fear of making mistakes, especially in pronunciation and grammar. This fear is exacerbated by social anxiety, such as the fear of being laughed at by friends. Additionally, fluctuating motivation and self-confidence hinder students' engagement in speaking English. On the external side, a social environment that does not consistently use English also affects the program's success. These findings confirm the importance of a more empathetic approach and a supportive learning environment for language programs to be effective in the long term.
