Abstract

This study is entitled Conceptual Metaphors in John Keats' Poems (The Third Volume). John Keats is a famous poet from England who lived in 1795 and died in 1821. The purpose of this study is to explain the application of conceptual metaphors found in John Keats' poems by determining phrases or statements that contain conceptual metaphors in his third volume of poetry as a form of research. The theory proposed by Lakoff & Johnson (2003), used for the approach in the study of language and cognition states that metaphor is a literary device used in poetry to construct figurative meaning by equating two unrelated concepts or objects. Then, metaphor is divided into several types of metaphor and one of them is conceptual metaphor. Conceptual metaphor is the understanding of abstract concepts based on metaphors derived from more concrete or real concepts. The research method used is close reading, focusing on each phrase or statement that contains a conceptual metaphor in the poem. Poetry is the object of analysis in this study, where most human societies use rhyme or poetry, which is a form of language that is broken down into lines because it utilizes limited human working memory, poetry is a respected method of using language. Then, the results of this study found 61 conceptual metaphor data contained in 16 poems in the third volume of John Keats, namely: Lamia Part I and Lamia Part II with 7 data, Isabella with 3 data, The Eve of St. Agnes with 5 data, Ode of St. Agnes with 5 data, Ode of St. Agnes with 5 data. Agnes with 5 data, Ode to a Nightingale with 5 data, Ode on a Grecian Urn with 4 data, Ode to Psyche with 4 data, Fancy with 2 data, Ode with 5 data, Lines on the Mermaid Tavern with 2 data, Robin Hood with 2 data, To Autumn with 2 data, Ode on Melancholy with 3 data, Hyperion - Book I with 5 data, Hyperion - Book II with 3 data, and Hyperion - Book III with 2 data. Of the many metaphors used to describe other dimensions, inner conflicts, and abstract concepts such as love, lies, and truth. This research shows that the third volume of Keats' poetry contains many conceptual metaphors in his poems. The impact of using conceptual metaphor in John Keats' poems, which comprise 16 poems in his third volume of poetry, has a significant impact on the richness of language and depth of meaning of his work. By using metaphors and similes, Keats can describe abstract and complex concepts such as love, life, truth, and lies beautifully and profoundly. Keywords: Semantics, Conceptual metaphor, John Keats' Poem
