Abstract

This study explores the application of spatial deixis in the movie "Dune: Part One." Spatial deixis is a subfield of pragmatics that focuses on how language indicates specific locations in discourse. This study identifies and analyzes data of spatial deixis within the film's dialogues, examining how characters refer to locations to enhance narrative and contextual understanding. By employing Yule's theory on deixis, this research categorizes and interprets the spatial deictic expressions used by characters, highlighting their roles in conveying proximity, distance, and movement within the film. This study analyzed 57 data. The findings reveal that spatial deixis in "Dune" significantly contributes to the depiction of setting of Arrakis, thereby aiding audience comprehension and engagement with the film's spatial dynamics and thematic elements. Thus, this study can provide the significance of how spatial deixis has an important role in helping the audience understand the spatial context and orientation of the characters in the story. Keywords: Pragmatics, Deixis, Spatial Deixis, Movie, Dune: Part One.
