Abstract
This study is about Permission to Dance by BTS with semiotic analysis to uncover the meanings of the symbols in the music video. The symbols identified in thisstudy carried significant meanings. The research focused on analyzing the music video Permission to Dance using the semiotic analysis approach with the concept from Culler (1978), considering BTS's widespread popularity across all age groups. Their songs, including the music video Permission to Dance, are known for conveying motivational messages. The methodology employed in this research involved the semiotic analysis approach, drawing on Perrine's theory (2002). The types of symbols in Perrine’s theory (2002) were categorized into four types: symbolic names, symbolic objects, symbolic actions, and symbolic settings. However, in this study, only three types of symbols were identified: symbolic objects, symbolic actions, and symbolic settings. The research findings indicated that the symbols in the music video Permission to Dance created meaning by representing the societal aspects during the pandemic. The video aims to motivate individuals, encourage them not to lose hope, and assure them that there was a better life awaiting them post-pandemic. Keywords: Literature, Semiotic, Symbolism, and Symbol.
