Abstract

This study aims to identify the types of illocutionary act used by “Ember” and “Wade” in the “Elemental” movie, and to explain how “Ember” and “Wade” use each type of illocutionary act found in their utterances in the “Elemental” movie. The theory to analyze the data was the illocutionary acts by Searle (1979). For collecting the data, this study had several steps: downloading and watching the “Elemental” movie, downloading and reading movie’s screenplay, creating codes, and classifying the data. For analyzing the data, this study had three steps: identifying the types of illocutionary acts, explaining their usage, and drawing the conclusion. As a result, Ember had the highest total use of illocution with a frequency of 25, while Wade only 14. For Assertives, Ember also had the most with 13 data found, while Wade only 5. For Directives, Ember still had the most with 7 findings, while Wade only 1 finding. For Commisives, Ember only used it twice, while Wade did not use it at all. For Expressives, Ember only found 2 data, while Wade had more with 4 findings. Finally, Declarations found 1 data for Ember, while Wade had more with 4 findings. In addition, Ember’s assertive and directive acts align with her strong-willed and proactive nature, whereas Wade’s expressive and declarative acts emphasize his emotional connection and influential role.
