Abstract
In communication, speech acts is an important aspect so that an utterance delivered can be understood by the interlocutor. Speech acts make us understand that language is used not only to convey information but also to convey a meaning (Yule, 1996). This research discusses the illocutionary acts in the movie The little Mermaid (2023) with a pragmatic approach. This research aims to find out the types of illocutionary acts used by the main character and how the main character uses them throughout the storyline. This research is descriptive qualitative, the data was taken from the speech of Ariel and Eric characters that contain illocutionary acts. This research data is taken by downloading and watching the movie first, then analyzing and categorizing it into cach type. This is done to find out the meaning of the utterances that contain illocutionary acts. The data is analyzed by using Searle's theory (1979). The results showed that the illocutionary acts found in the movie The little Mermaid (2023) are divided into 4 types, namely; 25 directive, 23 assertive, 11 expressive, and 2 commissive. Then the main character uses each type of illocutionary act. Directive is used to give instructions, orders. Assertive is used to convey information, give conclusions. Expressive is used to thank for a blessing, protest, deny a statement. Commissive is used to make a promise, state a commitment. The implication that can be drawn from this research is how Ariel and Eric as the king's children use directive speech as a tool to direct and organize their subordinates in carrying out royal duties. The use of directive speech can add tension or clarify the feelings they feel. on several occasions the two characters also use illocutionary acts of assertive, commissive, expressive types.
