Abstract
This study was entitled The use of Negative Politeness-Hedging Strategy Between Male and Female in “You Hurt My Feelings” Movie. The purpose of this study was to identify who used the most negative politeness hedging strategies between male and female characters in the film "You Hurt My Feelings", and to explain how male and female characters use negative politeness hedging strategies in their communication with their speech partners. In this research used descriptive qualitative research method of negative politeness strategies proposed by Brown and Levinson (1987). The research found that the hedging strategies used by both male and female characters, if showed an overall higher frequency of hedging among female characters (79 instances) compared to male characters (71 instances). The movie "You Hurt My Feelings" revealed Hedge of Illocutionary Force (HIF) was the most frequently used strategy by male and Hedges Encoded in Particles (HEP) was the most frequently used strategy by female. Males were more likely to use HIF to protect their self-image. The use of HIF was a way for males to balance this expectation with the need to be polite and not too aggressive. While Females used HEPs to soften their speech, showed politeness and avoided appearing too direct or aggressive. HEP was used to add emotional nuance to speech, females used this strategy to express their feelings more subtly and indirectly, in line with social expectations of female emotional expression. Thus, it could be concluded that there were gender differences in the use of hedging strategies for negative politeness between males and females. Female characters often used small particles to soften their statements, while male characters used hedges that encoded illocutionary force at a slightly lower frequency.
