Abstract

This Design Research aimed at: (1) analyzing instructional needs in teaching the expressions of Asking/Giving Opinion and Asking/Offering Helps at Year Eight, (2) designing Cublak Cublak Suweng and Jamuran games considering the instructional needs identified, and (3) analyzing the implementation of Cublak Cublak Suweng and Jamuran games in teaching the expressions of Asking/Giving Opinion and Asking/Offering Helps at Year Eight. It was done by conducting three phases drawn by Akker, et al (2013). The phases are Preliminary Study, Development Phase, and Assessment Phase. The Preliminary Study was to analyze the instructional needs in teaching the expressions. The results of the analysis were used as the design principles in modifying CCS and Jamuran games for teaching the expressions. The Development Phase was to modify the traditional games to be games media for ELT based on the instructional needs identified. The Assessment Phase was to assess the implementation of the modified CCS and Jamuran games in real teaching of the expressions of Asking/Giving Opinion and Asking/Offering Helps at Year Eight with the seven students of MTs Plus Darul Ulum Jombang as the participants. The results obtained are as follows. First, the instructional needs identified were: (1) the teaching materials needed to be taught is simple dialogue, (2) the objective is to make students able to express meaning of the expressions, (3) the time allocation in teaching the expressions is 40 minutes with the 30 minute time slot can be used to implement games as students’ activity in flexible mode of timing, and (4) 8 expressions out of 21 are selected to be adapted in the song lyrics of CCS game and 9 expressions out of 20 are selected to be adapted in the song lyrics of Jamuran game. Second, the traditional games of CCS and Jamuran games could finally be modified and they were considered meet the instructional needs and were ready to be implemented based on the first cycle of validation. Third, the implementation of CCS and Jamuran games obtained the students positive attitudes and enjoyments towards the use of them. However, the implementation of CCS and Jamuran games have some attainments (e.g. It can overcome the students’ fears in speaking English with their surrounding environment) and weaknesses (e.g. It needs spaces in classroom).
