Abstract

Fricatives are consonant with typically the air escapes to small width passage and heard like hissing sound. This research conducted based on the fact that it is difficult for senior high school students to pronounce fricatives sounds. This research focused on pronunciation fricatives sounds that include the phonemes [θ], [ʃ], and [ʒ]. The objectives of the research were to classify and identify the types of errors, to find out what errors commonly made by the students, and to know what led them to make the errors in pronouncing fricative sounds. The method used in this research was qualitative method. This research also used error analysis procedure starting from data collection, identify of error, description of error, explanation of error, and evaluation error. In this research, the data were collected by using test and interview with the students. After analyzing the data, it was found that there were two categories of errors made by the students in pronouncing fricative sounds. They were substitutions errors and omission errors. From 93 pronunciation errors, there was 1 omission errors and 92 substitutions errors categories. The researcher also found that there were three causes of students’ errors in pronouncing fricative sounds, they were overgeneralization, ignorance the rule of restriction, and incomplete application of rule.
