Abstract

This study aimed to identify the types of neologism used by George Orwell in 1984 Novel, to identify the types of translation strategies used by Landung Simatupang and Lulu Wijaya in translating neologisms in 1984 Novel to Indonesian, and to explain the level of translation accuracy achieved by the two translators in representing the meaning of the source text. The novel 1984 (Nineteen Eighty-Four) first published in 1949, as well as its two translated versions in Indonesian. The two translated versions are translations by Landung Simatupang (2021) and Lulu Wijaya (2024). This study discussed neologisms in George Orwell's 1984, focusing on the types of neologisms according to Newmark's theory (1988), translation strategies according to Mona Baker's theory (2018), and the level of accuracy based on theory of Nababan et al. (2012). This research applied a mixed methods research design with data collection techniques through reading and analyzing the novel 1984 in the original English version, as well as two Indonesian translations by Landung Simatupang (2021) and Lulu Wijaya (2024). Neologisms related to totalitarianism were identified and recorded as the main focus of analysis. The results showed that out of 71 neologism data, Landung Simatupang's translation consisted of 66 data (92.96%) classified as accurate, 5 data (7.04%) less accurate, and There was no data that falls into the inaccurate category. Meanwhile, Lulu Wijaya's translation consisted of 65 data (91.55%) that are classified as accurate, 5 data (7.04%) are less accurate, and 1 data (1.41%) is inaccurate. This study showed that the difference in the selection of translation strategies has a significant effect on the level of accuracy in translating neologisms, with the result that Landung Simatupang's translation tended to be more accurate than that of Lulu Wijaya. The implication of this study emphasized the importance of selecting appropriate and contextualized strategies in translating neologisms to maintain the fidelity of meaning and clarity of message in the target language.
