Abstract
This study aimed to identify the types of transitivity processes and interpret their functions in President Volodymyr Zelenskyy political speech delivered at the UN General Assembly in 2024. The speech, which addressed the Russia-Ukraine war, was obtained from the official website of the President of Ukraine. The analysis was based on Halliday & Matthiessen's (2004) theory of transitivity, which included six types of processes: material, mental, relational, behavioral, verbal, and existential. This study employed a descriptive qualitative method, using steps of collecting data such as reading the speech text, copying the speech text, understanding its context, selecting and writing data, coding data, validating data to ensure accuracy, and tabulating data. The analysis revealed a total of 92 transitivity phrases and clauses identified in the speech text. The result showed that material processes were the often use with 31 data in total, followed by relational process 25 data, mental process 14 data , behavioral process 13 data, verbal process 5 data, and existential process 4 data. These findings show that the transitivity processes, particularly the material process, were used by the speaker as a political strategy to highlight Ukraine's real actions and struggles, to deliver clear messages to the world about the ongoing crisis, and to strengthen the spirit and determination of the Ukrainian people. Keywords: Systematic functional linguistics, transitivity process, Political Speech, Russia-Ukraine war, clause
