Abstract
This study focuses on analyzing the types of transitivity process and ideational meaning on the Joker’s utterances in “The Dark Knight” movie. Using Halliday's theory of systemic functional linguistics, this study employed a descriptive qualitative method to analyze the movie. This study identifies 6 types of transitivity process, there are 12 material process, 18 mental process (8 cognitive, 1 perceptive, 9 affective), 28 relational process (20 attributive, 8 identifying), 9 behavioural process (7 mental behavioural, 2 verbal behavioural), 4 verbal process, and 4 existential process. The dominant type of transitivity process is relational process. The relational process in this study shows the Joker's evil and cruel character, where he likes to assign values or attributes to things related to his crimes. Transitivity processes provide a well-rounded and scientifically grounded picture of the Joker as a complex, malevolent, and highly dangerous antagonist.
