Abstract

This study is about category shifts that focus on main character’s directive utterance in Brooklyn’s movie subtitles. The aims of this study are; (1) To describe the types of category shifts of directive utterance used by main character in Brooklyn’s movie subtitles; (2) To describe technique of translation of category shift in directive utterance used by main character in Brooklyn’s movie subtitles; and (3) To describe the accuracy of Brooklyn’s movie subtitles. This study applied 3 theories, those are Catford’s theory in translation shift, Albir & Molina’s theory of translation technique, and Nababan’s theory in translation quality. This study employed descriptive qualitative method, the data of this study is taken from Eilis directive utterance in Brooklyn’s movie. The result of this study is divided into 3 findings related to the problem discusses. The first is category shifts that have been found are 90 data. Those come from 43 data structure shift, 4 data class shift, 37 data unit shift, and 6 data intra-system shift. The second result is translation technique that is used in the category shifts, there are 11 techniques and they appear in 151 frequencies. The first most used is Established Equivalent that occurs 67 times. Then the second highest number of translation techniques is Variation that occurs 32 times. While Literal Translation occurs 9 times. Furthermore, Transposition occurs 8 times. Thus, Linguistic Amplification occurs 8 times. Then followed by Modulation occurs 6 times. While Discursive Creation occurs 6 times. Besides, Reduction occurs 5 times. Then, Borrowing occurs 4 times. Furthermore, Linguistic Compression occurs 4 times. While the lowest technique is Generalization, it occurs 2 times. The last result is translation quality which have translated less accurate with the total score 2,62. By this study, it can be concluded that category shifts and translation technique influence the accuracy of translation.
