Abstract

In English, there are some differences in writing singular and plural nouns. Many students are confused about it, especially nouns that have irregular plural forms. The formation of irregular plural nouns has very complex and unique patterns. The study aims to get information about the types of errors commonly made by the students in constructing irregular plural nouns and to know how the errors occurred. This current study applied descriptive qualitative with error analysis technique. The data were collected by giving respondents a test on irregular plural construction. The test consists of 28 questions. The result of the study shows that the respondents‟ error can be classified into three types: misformation=164 (e.g., Cactuses, Quizes, fishes), addition=49 (e.g. sheeps), and omission=28 (e.g., Childen). Misformation was the most common error that the respondents made. More specifically, it occurs to the nouns that had quite dissimilar plural forms from the singular ones (e.g., foot – feet, goose – geese). They generally followed their limited knowledge in L2 when constructing the irregular plural forms. The results of this study are useful for the process of learning English.
