To make students active in speaking class, teacher needs to give questions to spur the students to be active and could interact well. This research aimed (1) to identify kinds of teacher‟s question in teaching speaking (2) to know the purpose of teacher‟s question. This research used descriptive qualitative method. The subject of this research was an English teacher of SMP DU 1 Jombong. Based on the analysis it was found that there were six kinds of question that teacher used in teaching speaking: knowledge question, comprehension question, application question, analysis question, synthesis question and evaluation question. And the most used was knowledge question which were 16 questions. And the least were two kinds of questions synthesis and evaluation question which 2 question. Based on the analysis, it can be concluded that knowledge question is mostly used in teaching speaking. The purpose of the teacher‟s question; (1) to know student’s understanding it is the purpose of knowledge question, (2) to develop students’ understanding to the lesson it is the purpose of comprehension question (3) to review the material and got the correct answer it is the purpose of application question, (4) to make students curious to the material that the teacher’s taught it is the purpose of analysis question, (5) to develop critical thinking of the students it is the purpose of synthesis question. And the six (6) is to make students more confident to share their opinion and make conclusion. Keyword: teacher‟s question and speaking.
