Abstract

In learning speaking especially in descriptive text, the students should be able to imagine the object then describe it in the form of speaking activity. However, they often face difficulties during speaking process. They frequently do not have enough opportunity to practice speaking. Students stopped talking because they could not find suitable words and expressions. It was kind of lack topical knowledge that they did not know what to speak. To overcome those problems, students need more vocabularies and more interactive activities. In this case, the teacher needs to apply a technique to make the teaching learning process done more effectively. This research was proposed to design some activities through speed pairs technique for the teacher to teach speaking in descriptive text. Speaking activities are some activities that used by the teacher in speaking class in order to rise students speaking ability. Meanwhile Speed Pairs is a technique that can increase students’ proficiency and confidence in applying target-language structures in conversational contexts with their peers. The activities were designed based on the student’s need. The design of this research was Design Based Research as proposed by Akker, et al. (2013). To collect the data, this research used an interview and questionnaire. In addition, the assessment of the speaking activities through speed pairs technique was done by giving questionnaire to get assessment from the teacher. The result showed that the design speaking activities through speed pairs technique was very good and suggested use to teach speaking for descriptive text.
