Abstract

To have a good interaction in the classroom and to increase students understanding of the material provided, students need to give some responses to the teacher in the classroom. This was one of an effective ways to see the interaction between students and the teacher. The purpose of this study was to determine the type and function of student responses in the classroom. This study used a descriptive quantitative method. The study was conducted to determine the level of student responses. Data were collected through observation during the teaching and learning process and interviews with the teacher. After analyzing the data, it could be seen that there were 3 types of student response levels found. They were students response to remember level, understand level, and applay level. The number of responses given by students was 14 responses. The level of remember response consisted of 5 student responses, understand response levels consisted of 5 student responses, and applay response level consisted of 4 student responses. Based on observations, the response often given by students was remember, understand levels, and apply. Because all three were included in low-level thinking skills. Whereas at the level of analyze, evaluate, create as one of the high-level thinking skills, only one student responds. Besides, student responses were very important for the teacher in knowing students' understanding of the material provided, and it was also important for students to improve their understanding of the material learned in the seventh grade SPMN 3 Peterongan.
