Abstract

The use of various media in teaching has become teacher’s need now days. This research aimed at finding out the kinds and the application of teacher’s media in the English teaching and learning process. The teacher’s competence was also analyzed in this study. This research was conducted by using descriptive qualitative method. The source of the data was the teacher’s activities during the English teaching and learning process. The data were collected through observation, and interview. The observation contains all the activities happened in the classroom. There were three kinds of media used by the English teacher in teaching reading comprehension. They were: (1) course book and worksheets of visual media, (2) speaker active of audio media, and (3) film of audio – visual media. Those all media used by the English teacher in teaching and learning process. The result of the study showed that kinds and the application of teacher’s media brought many benefits such as; attractive and enriching in the teaching content. In line with this, the use of teacher’s media in English teaching was mostly positive. Students were more interested in the teaching and focused on the lesson. However, in teacher’s competence especially in pedagogical competence the teacher had some of problem when used the media during teaching and learning process. Good preparation and maintenance of classroom activities were needed for those who applied media in the teaching. The teacher should be able to operate the teaching equipment well in order to avoid wasting too much time in preparing and operating the teaching equipment.
