Abstract

Using a specific technique in the teaching and learning process is one of the effective ways for introducing the material to the students. Brainstorming technique is a common technique used in education especially in language learning. By using a brainstorming technique the students are able to produce and generate more ideas effectively. Commonly, the brainstorming technique is used in teaching writing. Some research shows the implementation using this technique in teaching writing but rarely used in teaching speaking, whereas speaking is one of the important aspects of the learning language. This research was done qualitatively, involving the teacher during implementing a brainstorming technique in teaching speaking. To gain data, the researcher used an interview. The finding of the study showed that the teacher tended to use traditional brainstorming (TBS) rather than nominal brainstorming (NBS) and electronic brainstorming (EBS). Besides, the result of the interview also showed that there are three steps of brainstorming which the teacher needs to implement, First, preparation, second, present the problem, and third, guide the discussion.
