Abstract

This research was a literary criticism which studied the portrayal of political scandal in An Ideal Husband by Oscar Wilde. The purpose of this research was to know the portrayal of political scandal in An Ideal Husband with the reality of political scandal in London. This research focused on corruption, bribery and the factors of doing political scandal that were shown in London during Victorian era by using mimetic approach. This research used descriptive qualitative approach to analyze the utterances containing political scandal in drama. The main data were taken from drama script which was published by ICON Classics in 2005 and printed in United State of America, it consisted of 210 pages. The secondary data were the data that support the main data. They contained the information about political scandal, especially corruption, bribery and the factors of doing political scandal. The findings of this research showed that there were two political scandals in England during Victorian era portrayed in drama. They were corruption and bribery. They occurred when the election in England held in 1832. It was strengthening in 1857 and getting worse in 1880 but it decreased in 1900. The factors to do those kinds of political scandals were commonly because of a wealth, an ambition and a social class. Finally, by using mimetic approach, it can be concluded that An Ideal Husband covered well about the political scandal, especially corruption, bribery and the factors of doing political scandal.
