Abstract

This study was about translation shift in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie. This research focused on the category shift and translation technique of verb applied in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie. The purpose of the study is: (1) To identify the kinds of category shift of action verbs used in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie, (2) To identify the translation techniques most used to translate action verbs in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie, (3) To explain how the accuracy of verb in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie. This study applied descriptive qualitative method. The data in this study is the action verbs spoken by all characters in the movie of Alice Through The Looking Glass. There are 377 action verbs spoken by all characters, but it only 117 action verbs do shifting. The theory of verb is used according to the theory of John Eastwood (1994). The translation shift theory is proposed by Catford (1965), while the translation shift theory is based on Molina & Albir (2002), and the translation quality assessement instrument provided by Nababan et all (2012) and only focused on the accuracy. The result of this study shown, there were 4 types of category shift applied to translate the action verbs in the subtitle of Alice Through The Looking Glass movie. They were structure shift, class shift, unit shift, and intra-system shift. Unit shift was the most shift applied to translate the action verbs because there were action verbs in a form of phrase. Phrase was translated into a word in the target language, so that it called as unit shift. While the translation technique, it has found 6 tehniques. Those are establish equivalent, discursive creation, transposition, linguistic amplification, modulation, and amplification. Establish equivalent was the dominant technique used to translate the action verbs. This technique applied to be equivalent between source language and target language. From 117 data, there were 115 were accurate and 2 data were less accurate. The translation quality are mostly accurate because the source language and target language have delivered the context well. While the less accurate caused by the usage of word in the targer language is less equivalent to the context. Thus, the existence of shift had an effect in the target language because between bahasa and english had a different system. So that shift became the strategy to get the proper translation. While translation technique was used in translating texts to get the equivalent and impact on the accuracy. Key words: Translation, Shift, Translation technique, Accuracy, Verb.
