Abstract

This thesis was a literary criticism which studied the types of oppression which was experienced by a main woman figure named by Maddy in Danielle Steel’s novel Journey. The purpose of this study was to describe the types of oppression which had experienced by main figure in Journey using oppression theory from Irish Young and classifying the types of oppression based on aspects of feminism including economic, education, social, and politic. And then Maddy’s reaction in faced the oppression. This study used descriptive qualitative method to depict the types of oppression toward a woman named Maddy and her reaction in facing the oppression. The data was taken from the utterances of novel Journey by Danielle Steel that was published in New York in 2000. By this study it was found that Maddy faced five types of Oppression, they were exploitation, marginalization, powerlessness, cultural imperialism, and violence had occurred to a main woman character in novel Journey. Those of oppression above came from her husbands namely the first husband, Bobby Joe and the second husband, Jack Hunter. The Maddy’s reaction in facing the oppression had different process between Bobby Joe and Jack Hunter. Maddy was aware if she was oppressed by Bobby and she determined to divorce with him. Meanwhile Maddy was not conscious that she obtained mentally oppression from Jack and she understood it when she had joined on commission against women. Maddy earned helping from her friends in the commission so Maddy had courage to leave her second husband, Jack Hunter and at the end she decides to divorce him. And then she found happiness in her life.
