Abstract

There are four basic skills to be learnt by every student in learning English. They are speaking, listening, reading and writing. Among the skills, speaking needs to be paid more attention. Unfortunately, based on the preliminary study in MTsN Tambakberas, some students had difficulties in learning speaking skill because they thought speaking was less fun than the other skills. Therefore, an alternative media for enhancing the students‟ motivation should be introduced, and it is a card game. Because from 43 students only 39,53% (16 students) passed criteria of achievement score or KKM. Thus, this research aimed to improve students‟ achievement and speaking involvement in the classroom by using card games proposed by Halfield (1999). Moreover, this research would increase 65% (27 students) of 43 students. This research used classroom action research design by Kemmis et al.‟s (2014) which involve planning, acting, observing and reflecting. The research found out that card games were able to improve the students‟ speaking skill. However in cycle 1, the result was not quite satisfying as indicated by the result of the achievement test. It caused the average score of the students‟ achievement test was 56,98. There were 27.90% (9 students) who passed KKM (75,00). Then the percentage score of the students‟ achievement test in cycle II was increased to 65,00 % (27 students). Furthermore, the result of observation checklist in cycle I and cycle II had increased significantly. It can be seen from cycle I only seven categories of excellent, one from good categories, and four categories. However, the result in cycle II was seven categories of excellent, five categories from good categories. So, The result indicated that the students‟ active involvement as well as their motivation was high. The researcher suggested to the teacher to use card games as media in improving students‟ speaking skill and being more active and enthusiastic. Next researcher who are interested such similar research, they can choose other alternative to fulfill the students speaking skill. They can or modify this model (card games) to get more innovative in improving students‟ speaking skill or other English skill (Writing, listening and reading)
