Abstract

This study was to identify the common errors in constructing simple present sentences as an L1 interference and L2 overgeneralization made by the seventh grade students of SMP Darul Ulum 1. The analysis focuses on what are factor contributing the students were influenced by their mother tongue and what are the factor contributing the students overgeneralized the L2 sentences structures. To analyse the data, this study used descriptive qualitative research design. The subjects of study were 40 students categorized as novice high level of the seventh grade students of SMP Darul Ulum 1 Jombang. The data were the students writing tasks and the result of interview with the respondents. The data were analyzed to know the types of errors that the students commonly made and the factors that underlay the errors. This study was found that the most common errors in constructing Simple Present sentences happened because the students failed to use copula verb (to be) in non- verbal sentences and the correct verb forms because they were still influenced by their mother tongue and the students had not mastered the English structures well.The factors contributing to the errors as a result of L1 interference were markedness and language distance (the different sentence structures & patterns). The factors contributing to the errors as a result of l2 overgeneralization were inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning
