Abstract

The background of the research in this thesis is based on the phenomena that many students of Indonesia have difficulty in learning of reading comprehension in the classroom. As a result, it makes the students become less active in teaching learning process. In addition, teaching strategies which teacher implemented was not suitable for students’ educational background. This research was conducted to find out what teaching strategies are used by a senior high school teacher of MAN Darul Ulum in overcoming the problems in teaching reading comprehension and how teaching strategies are implemented by a senior high school teacher of MAN Darul Ulum in teaching reading comprehension. The method of this research was qualitative research. The subject of this research was an English teacher at MAN Darul Ulum Rejoso, Jombang. The instrument of this research was an interview. The result of the research found some teaching strategies that the teacher used, 1. In pre-reading activities. (a) The teacher encouraged the use of dictionaries to know difficult vocabularies. 2. In while reading activities (a) The teacher made some groups. (b) The teacher asked the students to look for the words which always appeared in the text. These strategies used for finding the detail information. (c) The teacher used Skimming or scanning strategy to find main idea. 3. In post reading activities (a) Giving feedback to give suggestions about the lesson. In general, the teacher did these strategies to know how far his students understand what the teacher has taught to them.
