Abstract

This thesis discussed G. Willow Wilson‟s novel entitled Alif The Unseen, to analyze signs of ontological confrontation faced by the main character which is described in the novel. Alif The Unseen is Wilson‟s first debut of writing. It got some awards both as a winner and nominee and won the 2013 World Fantasy Award, and it is uniquely serves the metaphysical journey blended with the religious theme and science-fiction genre which told about a young hacker named Alif as the main character. This thesis assumes that Alif lives in a transition from modern to postmodern that has to make him adapt with the environment around. This thesis is qualitative research which used the Postmodernism studies to understand one of the strategies to show the ontological confrontations in the novel. The data were in the form of utterances, descriptions, and dialogues from Alif The Unseen novel, published by Grove Press as an imprint of Grove/Atlantic, Inc. Printed in New York, United States of America in 2012, consists of 433 pages and sixteen chapters. The result of the study were as follows: Alif as the main character portrayed the condition of Postmodern society in 21th era that have a high civilization and respects the plurality of various creatures. This caused the ontological confrontations which classified the 50 data into 3 signs, they were confrontation between the fiction and the historical realemes, the fusion between two worlds, and polyglot. There were five reactions of Alif toward the ontological confrontations, they were refusal reaction, skeptical reaction, curiosity reaction, surprise reaction, and acceptance reaction. It can be said that Alif as the part of Postmodern society must recognized the jinn creatures around him as the hacker who has the high ability and dependency of the technology. Keywords: Postmodernism, Ontological Confrontation, Plurality.
