Abstract

This study aimed at analyzing the deixis in Beauty and the Beast movie. This applied Levinson‟s theory and used pragmatics approach. Deixis is a technical term (from Greek) for one of the most basic things we do with utterances (Yule. 1996;9). It means „pointing‟ via language. The aims of this study are: (1) to find out the types of deixis in Beauty and the Beast movie (2) to find out how deixis functioned in Beauty and the Beast movie. In conducting this study, qualitative method was applied to describe the types of deixis in which the data taken from the utterances in Beauty and the Beast movie. There were 162 data found by researcher. The results of this study showed that there were four types of deixis found in Beauty and the Beast movie, they were 131 data of personal deixis, 18 data of place deixis, 9 data of time deixis and 4 data found of discourse deixis. Based on this analysis it can be concluded that personal deixis is the most dominant types of deixis used than the other types. Belle as the main character is often used personal deixis to made conversation and interact with her father, Beast, Gaston and the people in the villages also with the Beast‟s servants when Belle there is in the castle.
