Abstract

This studyis a literary criticism which analyzedself-determinationexperienced by Elizabeth Gilbert or Liz as the main character in Eat, Pray, Love novel. This study used descriptive qualitative approach in order to describe the way Liz determineherself and the impact of her existentialism. The data were utterances and sentences in the Eat, Pray, Love novel by Elizabeth Gilbert Published by Bloomsbury Publishing Plc in 36 Soho Square, London W1D 3QY, Great Britanian in 2006 that consist of 445 pages. The result of this study showed that the way Liz determine herself is devided into three aspects based on her love life, belief, and social life. The first aspect is based on her love life. In this aspect Liz makes decisions by getting divorce and having a boyfriends. The second aspect is based on her belief. It deals with the way Liz finds God by going to Ashram India. The third is the aspect in social life. It relates to the way Liz makes realitionship in society by helping people arround her. Those aspects cause the problems that have consequences for her existentialism. The problems come to Liz‟s life as consequences of her decision. It has impacts for her existentialism. As the result, Liz‟s being a free woman who more free to choose her way of life. Moreover, she‟s being a human more knows about God. It can be concluded that the way Liz determine her-self reveals her actualization to getexistentialism. Thus, it leads her more responsible person in every decision she made during her effort to gain existentialism. Keywords : Self-determination, Existentialism, “Eat, Pray, Love”.
