Abstract

This study was analyzed of the expressive illocutionary act of “Mary Santiago” in Another Cinderella Story movie. Another Cinderella Story is a retell of the Cinderella fairy tale in a modern setting. There were 12 characters in this movie, but this study only focused in main character that is Marry Santiago. This study using pragmatic approach. The objectices of the study is: (1) to identify what types of expressive illocutionary act are used in Another Cinderella Story movie based on Searle‟s theory, (2) to explaint how the main character used expressive illocutionary act. This study applied descriptif qualitative method. The data of this study were utterances of expressive illocutionary act and source of data was taken in Another Cinderella Story movie. This study used Searle‟s (1976) theory. This study were found three types of expressive illocutionary act. Among 7 data 58% are expressive of apologizing, expressive of thanking had 4 data 34%, the last types of expressive illocutionary act was expressive of welcoming that were 1 data 8%. The dominant types in this study is the expressive of apologizing. Expressive of appologizing can be called expression of some factors like a feeling of did not good speaker to opposite speech or do something wrong. The result of this study shows that the expressive illocutionary act of Mary Santiago is more uses Expressive apologizig, that was has dominant data in Another Cinderella Story movie.
